Coming Out

One night after my shift at work my mom picked me up. We have always been pretty close and lately we were closer than usual. We got to a stop light when she said to me. “May I ask you a question, without you getting angry?” I knew then and there she was going to ask if I was gay.

Weeks previous to this moment she kept saying to me, “You know you can tell me anything, right?”
I told her she could ask me. Then she asked if I was gay. It took me a couple seconds before I told her I was. Her reply was OK. I didn't know what to think of this reply, so I began to cry. She asked why and I grabbed her hand and told her I thought she would be mad at me. She told me that she would never be mad at me for being gay and said I was silly to think so.
She decided to turn the car around and take me to get a hot chocolate to calm me down and we talked about it more. After this I knew how fortunate I was to have such a supportive and loving mother who accepted me for who I was from the beginning. I no longer had to hide from her and I could be who I wanted to be. It felt like this huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. We grew closer after this because there was no longer this big secret between us. My attitude towards everything changed. My self-esteem shot through the roof and I became strong enough to come out all together. My mom gave me that strength and I can't thank her enough.
